Orchestra leader, composer and pianist Duke Ellington (1899-1974), part 58. This hour centres around Ellington as pianist. First with bass player Charlie Mingus and drummer Max Roach, from 1962, then duets with Billy Strayhorn from 1950, and to conclude unique recordings from 1932, 1947 and 1950.

The American violinist Stuff Smith (1909-1967). He started out as a showman but quickly switched to the violin. In the 30s, he was very popular but after that his audience became smaller. In the 50s, he produced various records again, with pianist Oscar Peterson and trumpet player Dizzy Gillespie, to name a few.

We focus on contemporary European and American saxophone players. We pose the question whether this music can still be considered jazz in the old sense. Nowadays, more influences count as jazz, like from popmusic, folk, soul, country, etc. That means improvisation is the only connecting element that makes music jazz-related.
