40 years of adventurous, dynamic and innovative music

ZAAL 100 in Amsterdam and the Concertzender in Utrecht celebrate their 40th anniversary on Saturday, September 14, with a concert evening in ZAAL 100.

A choice selection of artists will be featured on September 14. They are all musicians and composers who have been contributing to the adventurous musical offerings provided by both organisations over the past forty years. They will all be giving exclusive performances and will provide a unique birthday gift for anyone who is open to the wonderful world of contemporary music.

Who will be performing during the evening?

Michel Banabila
Michel Banabila, the composer and sound wizard from Rotterdam, always knows how to surprise the audience with astonishing music that never really fits into any genre. His latest album Unspeakable Visions was released by the quality label Knekelhuis and consists of a number of short pieces, each of which tells its own story.

Romke Kleefstra
The evening features a solo performance as Transtilla (a project in which he normally works together with Anne Chris Bakker).

Polar Twins
Mark Ritsema and Dirk Polak perform together as a singing duo with accordion and acoustic guitar under the name Polar Twins. They play songs from the two Polar Twins albums, but also work from the group Mecano (of which they are both memebers).

Paul Glazier
Glazier is an audio-visual artist from Amsterdam. As a photographer and video maker, he gets deep inside the objects that are in front of his camera. His projections are accompanied by live sound art to create fascinating audio-visual experiences that take the audience to unexplored new worlds.

German Popov aka OMFO
German Popov is a musician, composer, sound artist and researcher. In all his projects he tries to connect old and new worlds. His research into ethnographic and anthropological data that is ithen ncorporated into contemporary artistic activities has led to many different musical and social results. This evening his focus is on Central Asia.

Vanity Project:
Jack Beattie – electronics
Marielle Groven – violin, piano
Aaron Lumley – bass
Jacob Maskell-Key – drums
Vanity Project is an ongoing collaboration between Marielle Groven, drummer Jacob Maskell-Key and bassist Aaron Lumley. For this concert this improvisational group has been expanded with Jack Beattie. Beattie processes the acoustic sources for the musicians live during the performance to create an ‘electronic-sonic mirror’.

Luka Schuurman
Guitarist Luka Schuurman released his most recent album Cuidado in July 2024. However, he has been around for a long time and in 2019 released the album Buoyant Figures. This album featured the drone soundscape Guitar Static that was recorded using nine guitars. Schuurman likes to experiment with many similar-sounding instruments. For this 40th anniversary concert he will perform a composition for 40 triangles.
