Early style and early swing from the 20s, 30s and 40s.
Pianist Willie ‘the Lion’ Smith lived from 1897 to 1973. He originated from the traditions of Fats Waller and James P. Johnson, and became an inspiration for colleagues like Duke Ellington and Art Tatum. His style was based on that of the stride piano, but also includes more modern elements from the period of swing.
We begin with solo recordings from 1939, followed by duo recordings with his fellow pianist Don Ewell from 1967.
