sat 21 jul 2007 09:02 hrs

Gnawa Diffusion band from Grenoble (South of France) led by singer/songwriter Amazigh Kateb.

Amazigh is the son of the well known Algerian writer (Kateb Yacine). The band consists of Algerian and French musicians. Their music is world music by nature: a remarkable mix of North African gnawa music, Algerian folk music, reggae, rock, and hiphop with a Middle Eastern touch. The lyrics contain harsh political and social criticism with lots of irony and are sung in French, English and Arabic. The group Carrière begun in 1992. During this episode of World Minerals we will listen to a selection of their albums: Algeria 1997, Bab El Oued Kingston (1999) and Souk System (2003).
