“Mariama”, a programme with African music. Kora music.

The kora is a 21-string lute-bridge-harp that is used by the Mandinka people who live in Mali, Guinea, Senegal, Gambia and the northeastern part of Ivory Coast. The instrument was originally only played by djelis or griots. These musicians were provided for by aristocratic families like the Traoré’s, Keita’s and the Konaté’s. They sung epic and educational songs at court. Only men were allowed to play the kora. These troubadours passed on their musical knowledge from father to son for centuries.
In this programme besides music from Toumani Diabaté also that of the Kouyate’s and Ba Cissoko who all belong to the djeli caste. Many have altered the sound of the kora by tuning it differently or combining it with western instruments like for example Djeli Moussa Diaware does on his CD ‘Flamenkora’.
