ABC – the most groovy letters of the alphabet
The ABC Islands, also known as Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao, are not only blessed with the summer sun and azure blue seas, but also with an incredible amount of music styles. Because the fact that every island has its own history, every island ‘sounds’ different. The following roughly stands out.
Aruba has the most ‘white’ music. The climate on Aruba allowed the early colonists to have cattle breeding, for which the efforts of the native indians was satisfactory. On Bonaire, salt could be obtained, for which the stronger African slaves were needed in large numbers: music from Bonaire has unmistakable African influences. Curaçao was the entrepôt of slaves from the whole region. The African slaves were resold from here. It was the most important island, and here lived the colonial administrative elite, with their slaves. Musically seen, Curaçao takes up, in comparison with Aruba and Bonaire, a middle position.
This episode of World Minerals discusses the ABC Islands from their groovy side. Maybe the only thing for what the Dutch can not be blamed.
