Guinee celebrates 50 years of independence this year. Therefore today a historic recording of Kouyaté Sory Kandia, one of the most legendary singers of Guinee, who mostly sung in the traditional djeli style of the Mandinge, with a striking high voice.
Kouyaté Sory Kandia lived from 1933 to 1977. He was viewed as the "Singer of the Revolution" since the independence of Guinee in 1958. He first was a singer and dancer at Les Ballets Africains de la République de Guinee and at the ballet Djoliba National. After that he was artistic director of the “Ensemble Instrumental et Choral de la Voix de la Révolution” for ten years. He recorded three albums"L’épopée du Mandingue vol. 1, 2 en 3”, with big songs from the former empire of the Mandinge, accompanied by a acoustic trio, including balaphone player Kouyaté Djeli Sory. He also sung in a popular band for a period, Kélétigui et ses Tambourinis.
In 1970 he won the Grand Prix du Disque in Paris.
