Singer and guitar player Ebo Taylor is a veteran of Ghanaian highlife music. Together with Fela Kuti and Nigerian drummer Tony Allen, he was the most important designer of Afrobeat. Afrobeat is a combination of jazz, Yoruba music (Nigerian drum music), funk and highlife. Fela Kuti became world famous, Ebo Taylor was popular mainly in Ghana. In 2009, he made a long-awaited CD with his new band Bonze Konkoma.
Bonze Konkoma consists of young, talented musicians from the area of Saltpond where Taylor lives, but also music students at the University of Ghana where Taylor has been teaching Highlife and jazz guitar for seven years.
The use of the Konkoma drum ensemble, in addition to the guitars, bass, keyboard and the brass section, gives Ebo Taylor’s compositions and arrangements a modern flavour and makes it a unique project in modern Ghanaian music.
