HAWAIIAN MUSIC – ‘The Real Stuff !!’ (Part 7)
Bing Crosby

Bing Crosby and The Real Stuff !! does that go together??? We thought it would! The world famous American ‘Crooner’, who had already gained fame in 1937, recorded many Hawaiian songs and was accompanied by the most famous Hawaiian ensembles at the time, such as Lani and Dick McIntire, Harry Owens and others. Our often-voiced credo of the incredible popularity of Hawaiian music in America, which lasted a very long time, can safely said to be proven by Bing Crosby (Harry Lillis Crosby). While his first Hawaii record dates all the way back to 1935 with Victor Young’s orchestra, his last original Hawaiian record is from 1964, with the Nelson Riddle orchestra this time. That is a gap of 29 years.
After him, many other Americans experimented with the Hawaii repertoire. To name a few: Andy Williams, The Andrew Sisters, The Ames Brothers, Les Paul & Mary Ford, Marty Robbins, The King Sisters, Elvis Presley and many others. Is there nothing negative to be said about it? Well, there is.
The imago of Hawaii music being slow, romantic, beautiful beaches and swaying palm trees was definitely established by the so-called hapa-haole repertoire of these American stars. Regular listeners of our series ‘The Real Stuff’ have a better idea of the whole thing. That does not take away the fact that the songs as performed by Bing Crosby became classics that have continued to be played by each self-respecting Hawaiian band. So today, Bing Crosby throughout the years with his Hawaii repertoire.
