Behind the Wall:
Folk It! #1. On the 9th of November 1989 the Berlin Wall fell. Now, 25 years later, we look back in two episodes of Folk it! to the folk music that was produced in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
We do not mean the folkloric farce that was approved and used as an export means by the policy makers. We are looking for the revival of the roots music as it existed in the west, started off in the 1960s and fully prospering in the 1970s. The youth in the east appeared to be as influential in the urge for evolution of their own musical roots as they were in the west. The image of the east having just a kind of innocent and stupid people is not correct. Also behind the wall the young people plugged in and mixed modern and contemporary rhythms with early and local sounds. Influences of the west coast, the hippy sound, or the Irish light-footed string work came through. Often by receiving illegal recordings…
Singer songwriters are renowned now here andthey are an export product of the country that fought hardest against communism. But liedermacher that based themselves on folk music were already a common thing behind the formerly called iron curtain. The link to the small and intimate theatre, cabaret and musical was common good. Political songs were alternated with stories and sagas, the metaphoric storytelling that we also recognise in western European folk music. The first episode is about music from the various countries behind the former iron curtain and the Soviet Union, without wanting and being able to be complete nor exhaustive. A brief outline it is.. The second episode in the month of the fall of the Berlin Wall is an hour dedicated to folk music and singer songwriters from the DDR (German Democratic Republic).
