World Music NL! Episode 16: Viva Brasil 1995.

World Music NL! is a series of broadcasts on the variety of Dutch music genres which are counted among the large field of world music.
World music is since the eighties a collective term for folk music (also traditional music), non-Western classical music, non-Western pop music and the combinations of these.

In this episode, the CD Viva Brasil (PAN Records PPM 1995).
Every year in June and July, the Dutch organisation Redondo Events (previously known as Pro Motion) presents Brazilian music, played by international and local artists, on different locations in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. (www.vivabrasil.nl).
In 1995, the Viva Brasil Festival released a compilation CD with a number of prominent Brazilian bands which operate from the Netherlands.

Bacán
Bacán has a Brazilian repertory with elements from jazz and funk, and influences from the tango from Argentina and the candombe from Uruguay. The five musicians from Bacán are from South America (Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay). Singer Lilian Vieira is from Rio de Janeiro and grew up with Brazilian music. Pianist Juan Pablo Dobal and drummer Luis Luz both grew up with the samba and bossa nova in Buenos Aires. Leonardo Amuedo and bass player José Luis Lopretti brought their musical baggage from Montevideo.

O Septeto
Afro-Brazilian rhythms are at the base of the music from the formation O Septeto, founded by Jan Dumée (guitar, composition). Seven renowned jazz & fusion musicians and singer Sônia Genu play own compositions based on styles like maracatú, frevo, baião and aluja.

Alvorada
Brazilian rhythms and atmospheres, alternated with elements from jazz, fusion and other Latin styles are at the base of this group around the Surinamese pianist Ferial Karamat Ali. Every composition and arrangement is from Ferial, in which instrumental and vocal songs alternate each other.

Batida
Since 1980, the group Batida with singer José Koning has built a strong reputation in the Brazilian music scene in the Netherlands and beyond. In 1992, the group presented its third CD ‘Tudo Bem’ featuring The Stylus Horns, now permanent members of the band.

Treme Terra
The percussion formation Treme Terra (earthquake), with 20-25 members (including woodwinds and singers) led by Alaor Soares, gets its inspiration mainly from styles like samba-reggae, maracatú, baião, côco-de-roda and samba, but also jazz and funk.
