You can hear it everywhere around you. Muzak. That vague background music in for instance lifts, lounge areas, restaurants and waiting rooms. That affects us more or less. Subconsciously indicate the direction of thought and act. Nieuwe Vide, an art centre and breeding place in Haarlem, is curious to how artists from the Netherlands and abroad respond to this phenomenon.
The result was the exposition ‘The hills are alive with the sound of muzak’. On Saturday 24 October Craig Shuftan gave a lecture at the Nieuwe Vide. This Australian actor/teacher and radio producer who lives in Berlin and who is casually connected to the Academie voor Popcultuur in Leeuwarden, gives his outlook on muzak. The subject of his lecture was ‘background music’.
