From the treasury of ELECTRECORD (Romania).
(Part 2)
This is part two of a programme about the legendary Romanian record label Electrecord. When the ‘Iron Curtain’ was still in place, there was still a chance you would run into one of their records at a second-hand record store or on a jumble sale. How they got there? They were not imported into The Netherlands so maybe a holidaymaker was lucky enough to see behind the ‘Curtain’ or maybe it came from France since France sometimes released records from the Eastern bloc under the name of a French label. Anyway… the buyer of these records, sometimes for an odd penny, was really smart because in 9 out of 10 cases he was the new owner of recordings by the most virtuoso soloists to be found in Europe. On the cover you see the, mostly young, faces of those who later on would become very famous in the West as well. We only need mention the name of Gheorge Zamfir, who doesn’t know him? Or Nicolai Pirvu, resident of The Netherlands. But there were many more who demonstrated their virtuosity using the most divergent instruments of which the nai (pan flute), cimbalom (cimbál) and the vioara (violin) are the most well-known. But you could also hear accordions, trumpets, saxophones and all sorts of wooden flutes on these records. Plus, they were all played in a ‘punishing’ pace. Over the years, the producer of this programme has collected a number of these records and in this episode we have randomly chosen a few to play. We decided to number the programmes making this the second episode because undoubtedly more will follow. You yourself can speed things up by sending a letter or an email to the Concertzender saying: "Please more of that stuff!".
