The Night: World music

This night is dedicated to a number of artists who perform during the International Gipsy Festival, on Saturday 28 May, in Tilburg.

Program International Gipsy Festival.
Amira Medunjanin.
For Amira Medunjanin is this album one step closer to the worldwide revelation of the ‘Sevdah’. The ‘Sevdah’ is a music style from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The origin of the music is in the time of the Ottoman oppression of the Balkans. The Sevdah (or Sevdalinka) is composed in the so-called gipsy scale, which creates an oriental atmosphere. Characteristic for the music are instruments like the accordion, the violin, often accompanied by guitar and drums. Cd. Silk & Stone van Amira Medunjanin.  Label: World Village/Harmonia  Mundi. Haydamaky (350x233).jpgHaydamaky.
The music by Haydamaky is inspired by ethnic sounds from all over the world, but especially from those from the regions in Ukraine. They play an eclectic mixture of ska, dub, reggae, punk, and – of course – the Ukrainian melodies. The band succeeds in reviving the Ukrainian roots. Their music is characterized by turbulent energy and a rollercoaster of tempo and temperaments. Even when you do not understand the lyrics, you will be carried away by the passionate music. Video
Dobranotc-Vinograd.jpgDobranotch from St. Petersburg was started in 1997 by the Russian community in Nantes (France). Since 2001 they have settled in St. Petersburg and play experimental klezmer music mixed with various other movements in the world music. During their existence, the band has been to more than twenty countries all over the world. The group has taken part in many international festivals, including ‘Ethno Festival New Russia’ and dance festivals in Spain and Portugal, and world music and klezmer festivals in Russia and throughout Europe. Duvački Orkestar Mladi Braka Kadrievi.jpgDuvački Orkestar – Mladi Braka Kadrievi.
They have mastered a colourful palette of often virtuoso music styles, which are played by gipsies all over the world. The notion ‘Gipsy music’ is as hard to define as the Roma people themselves. Around 1000 AD they began with an often endless journey from South East India. Frequently, the Roma mixed their music with what was popular in the region they stopped. By doing so, different branches of the same musical tree came into being. Best known are probably the compelling rhythms from the Balkans and East Europe, in which the trumpet plays an important role. Cd. Stip Macedonia van Duvački Orkestar – Mladi Braka Kadrievi. Label: PAN Records (1999), code: PAN 173CD.  Video

Kottarashky & The Rain Dogs.jpgKottarashky & The Rain Dogs.
They opened the door to undiscover spots in Balkan music with the album Hey Opa! in 2009. On this album they play a collection of sounds from authentic field recordings from the Bulgarian country combined with tribal dance music. Influenced by artists like Tom Waits, Jimi Hendrix and Dr. John, the band uses the keyboard, the traditional clarinet, guitar, bass and drums. The album is a totally new universe of modern Balkan funk and blues. Guest musician Tui Mamaki, singer and composer from New Zealand, gives the vocals for the song ‘Begemot’, which interweaves soul music with psychedelic Gipsy styles from the Balkans. Cd. Demoni van Kottarashky & The Rain Dogs Kottarashky. Label: Asfalt Tango (2012), code: B007NES9FO. Video
Paulus Schäfer.jpgPaulus Schäfer.
One of the most talented Gipsy jazz guitar players of the Netherlands. Born in a Dutch Sinti gipsy community, Paulus Schäfer learned how to play the guitar on a very young age.
Besides listening to other Sinti and records of his idol Django Reinhardt, he learned most of Wasso Grünholz – a legend within the Sinti community – and his cousin Stochelo Rosenberg. Paulus Schäfer can often be found on stage together with musicians like The Rosenberg Trio. Paulus’ music has an exceptional sound, easy to recognize by the Gipsy Jazz/Swing sound. Video

Oleg Fateev.jpgOleg Fateev.
He was born in Moldova. After studying at a local music college, he continued his studies at the Russian Music Academy in Moscow. He graduated as bayan player and conductor. In 1996 he settled in the Netherlands, where he played solo concerts, but he was also often asked by other musicians like Herman van Veen and Leoni Jansen. In 1998, he began the Oleg Fateev Trio. They play mainly popular melodies and original dance rhytmes from Moldova, Russia and Bulgaria, wilfully arranged and complemented with jazz influences. Besides adapting traditional melodies, Oleg also makes his own work. Cd. Dreams van Oleg Fateev. Label: Oleg Fateev (2009), code: 001208. Video
Maurice Leenaars Quintet live-at-paradox (345x350).jpgMaurice Leenaars Quintet
By the press he is called the best Dutch flamenco guitar player. After his graduation at the conservatory, he went to live for one year in Seville, Spain. He played with everyone who was able to sing a little. This period was important for his development as guitar player and composer. Since 2008 he also regularly plays with trumpet player Eric Vloeimans. In 2011, Maurice Leenaars stood on the stage of the 15th International Gipsy Festival in Tilburg, together with the dance duo Antonio de Verónica & Saray Cortés from Malaga. On this album Live at Paradox, saxophonist Paul van Kemenade plays an important role. Cd. Live at Paradox van het Maurice Leenaars Quintet. Video
