A passionate iconoclast and clever, musical bridge-builder. Muscle minimalism with a golden heart and an unadulterated punk attitude.
At the beginning of May, the British composer Steve Martland (1959-2013) passed away at the age of 53. This former student of Louis Andriessen grew in a few decennia into a unique voice within the English music landscape. A stuffy, academic narrow-mindedness was alien to him. Martland got inspiration from everything and he wanted to emotionally drag along the listener with his physical music.

In this episode of Theme, some of his earlier classics, like the illustrious symphonic work ‘Babi Yar’ (1983) and music he composed for his own Steve Martland Band.
