A meditation on contemporary music.

Charles, Chuck, Deely

On 9 January 2017, Charles –Chuck- Deely passes away at the age of 62. No one really knows how long Chuck played on the streets of The Hague, but it must have been over twenty years. Year round, through rain, storm and frost, he sat at the central station in the early hours. At around half past nine, when the long line of business men dried up, he would move to his spot in front of the HEMA. There he stayed, until closing time. Even in the weekends.

Hidden in his thick parka, with a dirty old guitar and a voice like sand paper, or sometimes with no voice at all, he would sit in the most hostile place in town, between the squeaking trolleys, roaring scooters and megalomaniac buildings, on the street lacking human sizing. And lately the deafening noise of the partly demolition and renovation of the old VROM building is added to the mix.
But Chuck could really sing and really play! But he was mostly loved by the citizens, business men and retailers of The Hague for his personality. Cats supposedly find the space at home that has the most negative energy, to absorb and direct it. Chuck supposedly made the streets a few degrees warmer. Basically, Chuck was The Hague’s tabby cat. And apparently he also had nine lives, for living to the age of 62 under his conditions, is hard. But still, Chuck used up his last life on 9 January 2017 and passed away. The Hague is a few degrees colder from now on. Read the interview with Chuck Deely on: http://wonomagazine.blogspot.nl/2012/06/teacher-deely-interview-with-chuck.html.
