Tonight in Orient Express, the second programme on the modal music of Shashmaqam from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Shashmaqam means “six modes” and is a collection of six suites that add up to 250 pieces. The titles of the modes are Buzruk, Rast, Nawa, Dugah, Segah, and Iraq.
Last week, we listened to the maqam Rast, performed by the Maqam Ensemble of the Tashkent Conservatoire, recorded in Tashkent in 1989. This week, we play maqam Irok (Iraq).
In our first episode on 27 January 2016, we broadcasted the maqam Rost (Rast).
