Skara Brae lp cover
In this episode of Disc-Cover we will shed some light on the only album by the North Irish group Skara Brae from 1971. Despite the fact that the foursome only made one album, the influence it had on Irish folk music should not be underestimated. For the first time the song was central and for the most part sung in Gaelic.Furthermore, the group introduced harmonized vocals, which was quite unusual in Irish folk music, and two guitars and a clavinet for accompaniment in stead of accordion, fiddle, pipes or flutes. Guitarist/singer Daithi Sproule was the only non-family member of the group, which further existed of brothers an sisters Micheal O Domhnaill, Triona Ni Dhomhnaill and Maighread Ni Dhomhnaill. Micheal and Triona worked together many times in their later careers. Sproule became one of the pilars of the Irish top folk band Altan.
