In the 1930s, tenor saxophonist Lester Young (1909-1959) developed into Coleman Hawkins’ counterpart. He became known for his performances with Count Basie and Billie Holiday and his light and cool sound. In the second half of the 1940s he recorded albums for Verve with small line-ups, with musicians such as Harry Edison, Roy Eldridge, Vic Dickenson, Oscar Peterson and Teddy Wilson.
