Hummel revisited

thu 11 jan 2018 11:00 hrs

Part XXXVII.

We are still with Hummel in London, where he conducted operas. When he is finished, he can’t omit to perform again as a pianist, despite his disappointing experience two years before. First he plays a piano concert of his own, with little success, as his play has become old-fashioned in the meantime. Then he gives a joint concert with John Baptist Cramer (see portret), who is popular in England. This goes completely haywire, because Hummel didn’t study or too little due to lack of time. And to be able to play Mozart’s Phantasy KV 608 you need to have what it takes. In addition to this ingeniously composed work, we’ll broadcast some music of Cramer. Parts of sonatas which you’ll never hear and form a selection of his etudes, which are on the lectern for two hundred years and are still being studied passionately.
