Three generations of sarangi masters: Ustad Sabri Khan, Kamal Sabri and Suhail Yusuf Khan (sarangi), and Sarvar Sabri (tabla).
Ustad Sabri Khan was visiting professor of Ethnomusicology at the University of Washington. He has received many prizes, awards and recognition for his exceptional skills in playing sarangi.
The sarangi is in many ways a dying instrument. Once a vital part of Hindu classical music, the years of practice needed to master the difficult instrument, not to mention the enormous pain and bleeding by rubbing the cuticles against the wire as the most important method to make musical notes. But the great masters and their disciples are still there, and Ustad Sabri Khan is at the top.
On this album he brings his sons (Kamal and Sarvar Sabri) along with a young protege, Suhail Yusuf Khan, for a mind-expanding series of sarangi ragas. Each of the players individually can summon shrieking, agonizing tones that only a sarangi (or maybe Jimi Hendrix) can make. Put them together and you have the Hindu equivalent of the double guitar lines of a rock band. Fans of Indian classical music should enjoy this.
