Combinations from the 1940s and 50s
Frank Wess (1922 – 2013) started to play the alto sax on the age of ten, but switched to the tenor sax many years later. He played among others in a theatre orchestra and joined the orchestra of trombonist/singer Billy Eckstine. Moreover, he learnt to play the flute and joined Count Basie’s orchestra from 1953. Besides this, Wess frequently made recordings of small groups of his own, for instance for the Savoy label with guitar player Kenny Burrell and for Moodsville with piano player Tommy Flanagan.
