The Palace of Nostalgia

Jazz, blues and nostalgia, by Sjaak Roodenburg.

Bossa nova in the Palace at 20h00. It started in Rio, where Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes sat on a terrace and saw a girl strolling by. They immortalized her in ‘The Girl from Ipanema’ – a worldwide hit for Astrud Gilberto & Stan Getz. The world was flooded with sun-drenched sounds: the bossa nova (‘new wave’) with passionate, sensual music became the rage and was adopted by a wide range of artists with songs as ‘Desafinado’, ‘Chega de Saudade’, ‘One Note Samba’, ‘Meditaçao’, ‘Blame it on the bossa nova’.
A Palace with Ella Fitzgerald, Walter Wanderley, Eydie Gorme, Chris Connor, Frank Sinatra, Lester Lanin, Jobim, Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie, Doris Day, Howard McGhee.
Of course, we will not miss João Gilberto (1931-2019) the shy ‘creator’ of this genre, who, after some first failing compositions, was called ‘The Legend’ because of his guitar play and his intimate, understated way of singing. He recently died under miserable circumstances.
