The Source of Sound

fri 25 oct 2019 21:00 hrs

The Source of Sound involves the material, the movement and the vibration of which music arises.

Episode 48: Cassettes, magazines and books.

The Friday-night episode of The Source of Sound (27 September 2019 at 9 p.m.) is dedicated to the third and last part of our summer series about the music cassette, the sound recording device of the last period of the previous century. Cassettes were not only released as independent music tapes, but also as attachments to books, as magazines and as home and handmade products. Sometimes, they were not even released at all but they found their way from hand to hand or duplicate to duplicate. In this programme, you will hear a number of examples of all these forms. For instance, you will hear Surinamese music in Amsterdam by Carib Indian band Yamore, musical examples to illustrate a German book about Africa, poets singing in Turkish as a musical illustration to another book, audio magazines Tellus, Music Works and Windows to Europe, music from the documentary film Afineciya and last but not least the national anthem of West Papua recorded in a refugee camp.
