Between Dreams and Reality

Composer: Albert Roussel

In part 14 of Between Dreams and Reality we will explore the piano music of French composer Albert Roussel.

We’ll start with Roussel’s first released work, Des heures passent… opus 1. Followed by a puppet story for children, Conte à la poupée. In the early 20th century, many composers also wrote music for children. We have the three-piece ensemble Rustiques opus 5 especially for the melancholic listeners among us. This work was written between 1903 and 1906. Next on the programme we play the two-piece sonatina opus 16. The last part of the regular programme is Petit canon perpétuel. This is a canon that can be repeated over and over, constantly going an octave higher, as much as the piano range allows. Lastly, the encore is the first part of the suite opus 14. All music is played by Emanuele Torquati.

1. Roussel. Des heures passent.., opus 1.
2. Roussel. Conte à la poupée, 1904.
3. Roussel. Rustiques, opus 5.
4. Roussel. Sonatine, opus 16.
5. Roussel. Petit canon perpétuel, 1913.
6. Roussel. Suite, opus 14, no. 1 (encore).

Emanuele Torquati, piano.
