Concert Acoustic Africa with Habib Koité and Afel Bocoum from Mali, and Oliver Mtkudzi from Zimbabwe (rerun)

On Friday 12 November 2010, the concert Acoustic Africa took place at which a few famous singers/guitarists performed: Habib Koité and Afel Bocoum from Mali, and Oliver Mtkudzi from Zimbabwe.

The concert took place in Rasa, Utrecht. The theme was the rich African guitar tradition. A dream group of musicians formed up: the popular singer/guitarist Habib Koité, desert blues singer/guitarist Afel Bocoum (cousin of Ali Farka Touré), both from Mali,  Zimbabwean Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi. The concert was broadcast before, on 14 January 2011.

In the meantime, it is ten years after, Afel Bocoum has just released his new CD Lindé, and Habib Koité released the CD Kharifa in 2019. Singer and guitarist Oliver Mtkudzi unfortunately died on 23 January 2019. And yes, Rasa has been closed, which is still considered a huge loss.

Afel Bocoum

Koité and Bocoum are old acquaintances of the regular Rasa audience, they performed there frequently. Mtukudzi could not be heard live in the Netherlands before. Internationally, He broke through with the band Wagon Wheels (together with Thomas Mapfumo) mid 1970s, and after that, he formed his own group: Black Spirits.

The special band consists of nine musicians: four guitarists, a bass player, a n’goni/African viol player, two percussionists, and a mbira (thumb piano) player. The small stage was rather crowded, but it was rare that all musicians were present at the same time. The concert gave a good reflection of the different styles of guitarists: melancholic desert music, desert blues and up-tempo chimurenga from Zimbabwe.
