Traditional music from Turkey & Greece.

The Turkish Derya Türkan and the Greek Sokratis Sinopoulos have been the most influential musicians in Istanbul for nearly three decades, playing the ‘pear-shaped kemenche’ or ‘Politiki lyra’ string instruments (previously mainly used by Greek immigrants in Istanbul). On this album they create an interactive story of their geographic, historical and personal travels. Starting from Istanbul, mother of these instruments and breeding ground of the best music of “makam” (melody types used in Turkish music) we travel to the island of Mytilini and Izmir, city of Rebetiko. From there we go to the Cyclades Islands and Konya – the home of the “Mevlevi” (the rotating Dervish dancers) and then back to the Sea of Marmara in Erdek. We will eventually return to Istanbul, this time for its taverna dancing, before heading to the place where this album was recorded – in the Church of Saint-Remi, Fernelmont, Belgium.

Café Aman Istanbul.
Fasl-i rembetiko from Café Aman Istanbul.
Drawing on the rembetiko repertoire of Anatolia and Greece, Café Aman marks a renaissance for rembetiko in Istanbul, reviving and renewing the spirit of the Café Aman taverns as a symbol of the Ottoman Empire’s melting pot culture from a century ago.
Café Aman Istanbul was founded in 2009 by Stelios Berberis and Pelin Suer with musicians from the Turkish Music Conservatory, later joined by bouzouki player Dimitris Lappas from Thessaloniki, and released this album in early 2012.
