Duke Ellington (1899-1974) began as a piano player in Washington DC and grew up to become one of the most important American conductors and composers of the 20th century.
Midway through the 1920s, he created the first compositions that would make him famous. Manager Irving Mills made sure Ellington made songs for all the large labels.
