Podcast on Bach, episode 19
In this episode, we continue with Bach on tour and let ourselves be guided by the Great Bach Atlas.
Johann Sebastian lost his mother and, shortly afterwards, his father, Johann Ambrosius Bach. Johann Sebastian was 10 years old when, in 1695, he was orphaned and taken in by his eldest brother in Ohrdruf, Johann Christoph Bach III, an organist at the Michaliskirche church.
Johann Sebastian absorbed all music like a sponge, read and copied great composers’ sheet music, and was taught by his brother. A hospice allowed him to study at the academy. But the young Bach wanted more, and at the age of 15, he left the safe shelter of his family and undertook a 12-day hike to Lüneburg, where he received a scholarship to study at the famous Michaelisschule.
