Musical Romanticism, explored by Pieter de Oude.
Tchaikovsky’s third symphony and Capriccio Italien
This hour is filled with Tchaikovsky’s music. Olso’s Philharmonic Orchestra will perform his songs for you. The recordings date back to the 1980s when this simple local orchestra was put on the map by a young Mariss Jansons. The young Russian knew how to inspire the pragmatic Norwegians and the recordings on the label Chandos are still high on people’s lists. We’ll listen to the lesser-known third symphony, which Tchaikovsky composed on a whim during a holiday in 1875. He said he wrote it to get rid of the melancholy he was feeling. We’ll also listen to the Capriccio Italien. This lively piece is a melting pot of Italian melodies which Tchaikovsky picked up during his holiday in Rome in 1880.
