If there is a 5th Friday in a month, Ton Maas is back with Acoustic Moods. Each time, he welcomes guests from the music world and talks to them about their favourite music. This time, Sjahin During welcomes us as a guest at his home. (repeat)
Percussionist Sjahin During first found his musical destination in Cuba, where he arrived more or less by chance. With his first band Bayouba Cante, he immediately experienced an international breakthrough. Still, his real success came when he decided years later to focus on his musical roots, mainly in the East because of his Turkish mother’s descent. This led to the founding of the groups Turqumstance, Tarhana and Arifa, in which, apart from himself, his faithful musical companions Franz von Chossy and Alex Simu play. Then, a few years ago, During made a surprising excursion to southern Africa when, together with singer Shishani, he formed a unique musical partnership with four women of the San Bushmen from the Kalahari Desert in Namibia. In this episode of Acoustic Moods, Ton Maas talks to Sjahin about his remarkable musical life story.
Old Roots New Routes is produced by the Ritmundo foundation as part of the concept Dutch Delta Sounds.
