The Last Century

Music by 20th-century composers.

1921 – 6

This programme features music that has been composed exactly one century ago. Today all works have one thing in common: South America.

The Paraguayan composer and guitarist Augustin Barrios is regarded as one of the greatest artists on his instrument and one of the driving forces for guitar composers. La Catedral, inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach is renowned for being his magnum opus.

Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos wrote his Quarteto Simbólico for the unusual setting of a women’s choir, a flute, a saxophone, a celesta and harp. He wove urban Brazilian influences into his compositions.

And Reynaldo Hahn is not really a true South American, he lived most of his live in France, but his mother was Venezuelan and he was born in Caracas. In 1921 Hahn wrote his piano quintet in F flat minor.
