Roaming the Baroque

Music from the 18th century.

Battuto en Pizzicato – a series about the baroque guitar by Lex Eisenhardt. Episode 2: Foscarini.

Former baroque guitar teacher Lex Eisenhardt focuses on Spanish, Italian and French music for the baroque guitar in the show titled ‘Battuto en Pizzicato’.
This 5-part series is broadcast every fourth Saturday of the month from 11 to 12 o’clock.

Episode 2: Foscarini. Around 1600, the guitar began a spectacular ascent in Italy, in a rapidly growing repertoire of the immensely popular canzonette, especially as it is ideal for accompanying oneself.
By 1630, people started looking for alternative ways to use the instrument. Giovanni Paolo Foscarini, who played the guitar as well as the lute and theorbo, began to integrate the two ways of playing, the plucked polyphony of the lute and the beaten harmonies of the guitar. This is how the mixed battuto-pizzicato style was created.
As an itinerant musician, Foscarini came into contact with the innovative French lute style, and he brought its influence to the guitar repertoire.
