Bartók’s Fifth String Quartet is full of Balkan dances and includes two nocturnal pieces. The Sixth String Quartet is entirely built around a beautiful, sad viola melody (Mesto), which returns in a harmonised form in the last section. World War II was about to erupt and Bartók had decided to leave for the United States.
