The wayward Prokofiev

wed 13 apr 2022 12:00 hrs

Prokofiev #40. A docudrama about one of the most prominent and independent composers of the 20th century.

On ‘The wayward Prokofiev’ every fortnight we share an hour-long feature on the life and work of the Russian 20th century composer Sergei Prokofiev, who was undoubtedly one of the greatest composers of the 20th century.

On today’s broadcast: In 1931, Prokofiev was firing from all cylinders, including a fourth symphony and a first string quartet, both commissioned works resulting from a major US tour in early 1931. It was also the year Sofia Gubaydoelina was born, and she carried the modernist tradition in Russia to new heights on her own terms after the Second World War.

  • Sergei Prokofiev. Symphony no. 4 in C major (1930) Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kirill Karabits.
  • Sergei Prokofiev.  String quartet for violin, viola and cello no. 1 in B minor (1930). Emerson String Quartet.
  • Sofia Goebajdoelina. Quintet for piano, violin, viola and cello (1957) Quatuor Molinari, Louise Bessette (piano).
