100 years Toots: On International Jazz Day, plenty of attention for Toots Thielemans, who would have turned 100 these days (and also a little bit for Charles Mingus, to whom the same applies).
All kinds of curiosities about Toots – from the early days a duet with the brilliant banjo player Harry Reser and from the bebop era as ‘Crazy Bop’.
Also attention for his role as supplier of music for soundtracks (‘Midnight Cowboy’, ‘Turks Fruit’), as accompanist – also of youngsters like Jamie Cullum (who dares to sing ‘One for my baby’)
Above all, of course, it’s about his masterful sound, which was both melancholic and joyful.
Toots was a sweet man, and in fact so was his music – sound that will make you feel warm. And that will remain so for a long time: music from Toots’ first century.
