Gorillaz – Part 2 (2001 – 2005)
This second episode of our radio documentary on British virtual band Gorillaz starts on the day when the world wakes up without the Twin Towers in New York City. Shortly after the attacks of 9/11, Damon Albarn, who is stranded in London, records the song 911 with, among others, rap group D12. Next we exchange their debut album for G-Sides, an album of remixes and tracks that didn’t make it onto the first album, and which includes a number of underrated gems. On the track Left Hand Suzuki Method, for instance, the band uses samples from Long, Long Ago by Thomas Haynes Bayly, a composition from 1833. We also hear samples of The Human League and music from horror film Dawn of The Dead. Music you will only hear on the Concertzender.
We finish our programme with an introduction to the band’s second studio album, released in 2005: Demon Days. The band seems to have exchanged the underground scene for commercial success, but that doesn’t mean they have to sacrifice quality. Simon Tong, among others, joins the band. He was a member of The Verve between 1996 and 1999 and was featured on hits like The Drugs Don’t Work and Bittersweet Symphony. Plenty to enjoy, we think, but please judge for yourself!
