Festival Slide Factory, Rotterdam 2009. From early music to big band, the trombone can do it all.

In Rotterdam, they hold the “Slide Factory” festival every two years, which celebrates the trombone in all its versatility. Of course, there is jazz and brass music, but there is also plenty of attention given to New Music, Early Music, and various forms of crossover.

Today we are featuring two concerts from the 2009 edition. In the first concert, the New Trombone Collective performs together with the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet. We often hear brass and saxophones together in big bands and wind ensembles, but here they play something different: commissioned compositions from Claudia Rumondor and Guillermo Lago (Willem van Merwijk), as well as arrangements of Sweelinck and Scarlatti.

In the second concert, we hear the Baroque trombone. This instrument already looked much like the modern trombone, but the bore was narrower and the bell was smaller, so it didn’t sound as brassy. Brass ensembles were very popular especially in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, so there is no shortage of material to fill a concert.

As a finale, we feature a number from the closing concert, in which a big band takes the stage; naturally, it is the big band of the Rotterdam Codarts conservatory.
