Behind the Dikes

Dutch jazz – Peter Nieuwerf

Peter Nieuwerf (1938-2015) was a Dutch jazz guitarist. His playing was characterized by a great attention to detail, and he often spoke of his craftsmanship. He was not easily pigeonholed into one specific genre, and musically he never drew boundaries between jazz, cabaret, and Dutch songs. He played with a variety of musicians, including Stephane Grappelli, Nancy Wilson, Astrud Gilberto, Toots Tielemans, Jasperina de Jong, Martine Bijl, Lia Dorana, and Cornelis Vreeswijk. Peter was versatile and a talented soloist, but his character was perhaps best suited to being a side man or accompanist. He had long musical relationships with Rudy Brink, Greetje Kauffeld, and bassists Rob Langereis and Ruud Ouwehand. His “claim to fame” was likely his performance in 1996 with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in New York, where he played Dmitri Shostakovich’s Jazz Suites.

Here are some of his notable works:

  • “Nobody Else But Me” with Wim Overgaauw
  • “The Song Is You” with Greetje Kauffeld and Rudy Brink
  • “Straighten Up And Fly Right” with Greetje Kauffeld and Rudy Brink
  • “Like A Lover” with Greetje Kauffeld and Jan Menu
  • “It Had To Be You” with Greetje Kauffeld and Jan Menu
  • “Embraceable You” with Armando
  • “Turks Fruit” with Rogier van Otterlo
  • “Waar blijft De Tijd” with Jasperina de Jong
  • “La Waltz 2 3” with Ruud Ouwehand and Bart van Lier
  • “This Can’t Be Love” with Ruud Ouwehand
  • “How Deep Is The Ocean” with Deborah Brown.
