Soul Jazz from the fifties
Today’s portrait is of organist BIG JOHN PATTON, who had his heyday in the 1960s. At Blue Note, he succeeded Jimmy Smith as a popular soul jazz organist, an impossible task, but especially his first series of records sold well. You’ll hear Patton with, among others, Grant Green, Ben Dixon, Blue Mitchell, Bobby Hutcherson, and Clifford Jarvis.
