The swan song of Orlando di Lasso, part 3 and finale. At the center of this mini-series is the three-part madrigal cycle ‘Lagrime di San Pietro’ by Orlando di Lasso.
Just before his death, Orlando di Lasso (ca. 1532-1594) wrote the ‘Lagrime de San Pietro’ and it is also known as his swan song. He was 62 years old at the time and suffering from ‘melancholia hypochondrica,’ according to his friend and court physician.
In this three-part miniseries, we end each episode with a section from Orlando di Lasso’s cycle ‘Lagrime de San Pietro.’ This is a three-part cycle of 20 spiritual madrigals and a concluding motet. We also pay attention to other works of this gifted composer who, at the end of the Renaissance, gave much space to expression, which would eventually become decisive for the Baroque.
