Immersive listening.

Immersive Listening is a term by American writer and critic Ted Gioia. He means music ‘that will swallow you up—heart and soul and everything else.’ All you have to do is give in.

This episode of Theme will feature three pieces that are perfect for immersive listening. A piece by Pauline Oliveros (pictured), who introduced the term Deep Listening, Stimmung by Stockhausen and a piece by Tristan Murail, who, as a spectralist, acknowledges his debt to Stimmung.

Programme details:

Pauline Oliveros (pictured) – Lear (Deep Listening Band)

Karlheinz Stockhausen – Stimmung (Theatre of Voices conducted by Paul Hiller)

Tristan Murail – Le lac (Argento Chamber Ensemble conducted by Michel Galante)
