The Last Century

Music by 20th-century composers

The guitar in the last century XXXI

A monthly series on guitar music from the previous century, with each episode featuring a different guitar concert. In today’s episode: music from Polish composer Alexandre Tansman.

Alexandre Tansman (1897-1986) was, like Frédéric Chopin, a Polish composer who lived and worked in France. Chopin was one of his greatest inspirations, but he was also influenced by contemporary composers like Schönberg and Stravinsky. Tansman is best known for his pianoworks, but his friend the famous Spanish guitar player Andrés Segovia asked him repeatedly to write some pieces for guitar. These guitar works prove how versatile a composer Tansman was.
