The Palace of Nostalgia

Jazz, blues and nostalgia, by Sjaak Roodenburg. A treasure hunt in the history of music.

Music from days gone by. Singer-songwriter and rock pionieer Bobby Charles with ‘Later alligator’ which Bill Haley made famous later on, Val Rosing who should have become ‘the British Bing Crosby’ (‘Please’), and Tex Williams, known for his ‘talking blues’ style, with his Western Caravan.

Vocalists as Nancy Wilson (‘Guess who I saw today’), Nina Simone (‘He needs me’) and an unexpectedly jazzy Patti Page (‘Taking a chance on love’).

From Dutch soil: guitarist Joop Scholten with ‘Guitar blues’ and Harry Bannink singing about the sleepwalking king of San Carazzo.

From the Jazz corner, trumpet player Roy Eldridge (‘Tim roof blues’), Clark Terry (‘Blues for Etta’) and Dave Brubeck with his Octet (‘Playland at the beach’).

The Oscar-category is won by a song created under immense pressure about a lucky fountain in Rome, which could be recorded by Sinatra, who happened to be in the film studio, and a sizeable orchestra.

And also: Tony Bennett, Diana Krall, and from the universe of the ‘field recordings’ Smoky McGinness with ‘Turkey in the straw’.
