I often perform music at the 4th of May, the day that The Netherlands commemorate the fallen of WWII (and victims of war in general). We want to celebrate being alive, living in freedom and I think it’s important to realise that this hasn’t always been the case or still isn’t in some places. We become silent, listen to music and recite names of so many courageous people. Sometimes in the news, death seems to be everywhere. Pope Francis was at the top of my news app; he inspired so many people to live without violence and from love. I also remember the words of the late Jan Rot in the Bosch Requiem from Aart Strootman, in 2023. He wrote this text and a piece of music just before his death, which wasn’t performed until after.

“Als jij dit hoort, ben ik al dood
Maar hoor het koor door jouw oor
Wij horen dit samen

Als jij mij ziet met ogen dicht
Zie ik het licht door jouw gezicht
Wij zien dat samen

Beschouw mij als op wereldreis

I would not want to burden or bring grief to your holiday or these days of spring, but let’s not forget to to be still once in a while. Especially on the 4th of May.
