The guitar in the 20th century – the legacy of Julian Bream (part II)
A monthly series of guitar music from the 20th century. Many composers in the last century were inspired by guitarist Julian Bream to write music for the guitar. Today, the second and final part.
Bream played many concerts together with tenor Peter Pears, who is also known as the life partner of composer Benjamin Britten. William Walton (1902-1983) even wrote a song cycle for them, called Anon in Love.
All works in this episode were written for Bream. We will listen to modernist work from Malcolm Arnold (1921-2006) and a passionate guitar concert from the Cuban composer Leo Brouwer (1939). In the piece All in Twilight from Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996), we hear both western and Japanse influences.
