American John Luther Adams was hardly known in our parts until a decade ago and was was quite often mistaken for the six years older John Adams. John Luther Adams lived in Alaska for four decades and then mostly in the Sonoran desert in Mexico. Thus, nature has become a natural part of his music.
The string quartet Waves & Particles is “inspired by quantum physics, fractal geometry and noise – which function as elemental metaphors in my music”. The short piece Dream of the Canyon Wren is an ode to a special little bird, the canyon wren, that Adams has encountered in the desert.
