Today, we start a new series on the Porto Rican musician Eddie Palmieri, the younger brother of Charlie (who was the subject of the past shows).
Eddie Palmieri was born in the Porto Rican part of Harlem in New York. Years later, the family moved to another Porto Rican neighbourhood, the South Bronx.
At first, Eddie wanted to play the timbales, but he didn’t like all that carrying around of the drums. His older brother Charlie had stimulated him to take piano lessons from a young age, and so the piano became his instrument in the end.
All the songs in this hour are played by Eddie Palmieri and his orchestra La Perfecta. Timbalero Manny Oquendo was an important member of this orchestra, and he was a great influence on not just Eddie but many New York musicians – teaching and playing Cuban music.
