Caroline Shaw

sat 23 nov 2024

Theme on Wednesday 27 November at 20:00 CET features the music of the American composer Caroline Shaw.

42-year-old Caroline Shaw is one of the most striking American composers of our time. In 2013 she became the youngest composer ever to win the Pulitzer Music Prize. She is an accomplished violinist, but is especially notable for her crystal clear singing and accessible composing style. In her music you detect influences from minimalism, neoclassical and post-romanticism combined with the directness of pop music. She has collaborated with hip-hop icon Kanye West as well as with her favourite classical ensembles such as the Attacca Quartet and percussion group So Percussion. Shaw is a regular member of the vocal group Roomful of Teeth, for which she wrote the Pulitzer Prize-winning Partita for 8 voices. She is currently composer-in-residence at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. In this Theme broadcast the focus is on her often very strong string quartets and her close collaboration with So Percussion. Special attention is also paid to Shaw’s brand new film score for the four-hour documentary film Leonardo da Vinci by Ken Burns.
