Chronicle of Dutch Music: Tuesday 1 October 21:00 CET. The biography ‘The Stradivarius of the Emperor’ about the Maastricht cellist and composer Joseph Hollman (1852-1927) was recently published. That curious title is a good reason to make a programme about Joseph Hollman.
Joseph Hollman is said to have given his Stradivarius violincello as a gift to the Japanese Emperor when he played and taught at his court. Whether this is true or not is examined in the biography.
